In Loving Memory
At 6:36 p.m. (central) on Wednesday, April 22, 2020, Rev. Dr. Larry G. Hinson went to be with the Lord.
Born July 14, 1956, Larry dedicated his entire life to Ministry at the young age of 11 years old. In June 1967, he began to preach the gospel, laying the foundation for what would influence future generations in Christian Hip Hop and Christian Rap. In December of that same year, he stepped on a platform for the first time to sing with his family at a little church revival, leading to the formation of “The Original Hinsons.” By the age of 13, he was deeply engaged in full-time ministry, singing the gospel and spreading the good news about Jesus alongside his brothers Kenny and Ronny, and his sister Yvonne.
The Hinsons wrote and recorded timeless classics such as “The Lighthouse,” “Come To the Water,” “Joy Comes In The Morning,” “Call Me Gone,” “That I Could Still Go Free,” and many more iconic songs that shaped the landscape of Hinson gospel music. The Hinsons also made weekly appearances on “The Gospel Singing Jubilee,” and in 2006, the group was honored with induction into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame.
A licensed minister with the Assembly of God since 1980, Larry embraced the call of full-time evangelism to further God‘s kingdom in 1981. His lovely wife, Jana, stood by his side throughout this journey for 44 years. Larry was blessed with three children: his oldest son Jay, his daughter Lyndi, and his youngest son Matthew. Throughout their ministry, they appeared on numerous television programs, including the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN & Daystar), helping to spread the message of the gospel like the powerful impact of Kenny Hinson's “The Lighthouse.”
A Musical Legacy "The Original Hinsons"
The Original Hinsons, sometimes known as The Singing Hinson Family, were a multi-award-winning Southern Gospel group formed in 1967, making significant contributions to gospel music, including the well-loved track by Kenny Hinson, 'The Lighthouse.' Though they were prominent during their active years until 1994, their influence can also be felt in genres like CHH and Christian Hip Hop, alongside the traditions of Christian Rap.
A Ministry Legacy "Larry Hinson Ministries"
Dr. Larry & Jana Hinson have a rich heritage in both Gospel Music and the powerful preaching of the spoken word. Dr. Larry Hinson is a founding member of the internationally acclaimed Southern Gospel Group ‘The Original Hinsons,’ known for timeless classics in Hinson gospel music like The Lighthouse, Call Me Gone, That I Could Still Go Free, and Come To The Water. With approximately 23 recording projects to their credit and seven years of weekly appearances on the nation’s former number one Christian television program, ‘The Gospel Singing Jubilee,’ Dr. Larry Hinson was proudly inducted into the Gospel Music Association’s ‘Hall of Fame’ in 2006 alongside all the Original Hinsons. After his influential time with the Original Hinsons, Dr. Larry Hinson, along with his wife Jana and their three kids, continued to pastor and evangelize, contributing to the vibrant community of Christian Rap and CHH, blending their deep roots in Gospel music with modern expressions.
Born To Rap for GOD "O.F.C. On Fire for Christ"
Jay Hinson, the oldest son of Dr. Hinson, now recognized in the Christian Hip Hop scene as JRev (Jay The Revelator), began his journey into rap in 1988 at his father’s church, the New Life Worship Center in North Little Rock, AR. Inspired by the renowned group DC TALK, Jay formed his first Rap Group, "O.F.C." (On Fire for Christ). The group performed at various church events and local street outreach initiatives in their hometown of NLR, contributing to the growth of CHH and Christian Rap. Over the years, as time passed, Jay discovered he was the last member of O.F.C. still passionate about pursuing his rapping career, carrying forward the legacy of Hinson gospel music and the influences of artists like Kenny Hinson from The Lighthouse.
Blast From The Past "39th Street Boyz"
In 1999, Jay moved to Nashville, TN, where he was discovered by the hot local rapper and entrepreneur, Ariacio Porter (SHO DADDY). This new partnership blossomed into a lifelong relationship. Over time, SHO invited Jay to join his group called the '39th Street Boyz'. This group was, of course, quite different from Jay's earlier endeavors due to its secular nature. Jay decided to embrace this new direction for several years until the passing of his father in April 2020, which prompted him to return to his true calling in Christian Hip Hop (CHH). Jay rededicated his life to Christ, changing his name from 'JROCK' to 'JRev' (Jay the Revelator). He started anew, focusing on making music and preaching for Jesus, blending elements of Christian Rap and his passion for hinson gospel music, reminiscent of inspirations like Kenny Hinson's 'The Lighthouse'.
Looking to the Future, "Jay The Revelator" JRev
In late 2020, Jay began to minister on Facebook LIVE, sharing his testimony with all who would watch. During his online revival, which he creatively called a "Praise Break" that lasted 55 days straight, culminating in a vibrant "Praise Quake", he engaged his fellow GODSQUAD followers by asking if they would like to hear JRev create a new album. Despite having no equipment, Jay felt led by GOD to seek donations for his ministry to buy and build a mini studio for his new project, 'Risen From The Ashes', planned for release in 2022. As Dr. Hinson would often remark, "Little is much when GOD is in it," and indeed, GOD made this possible through a select and obedient few. Fast forward to today, Jay has transformed that vision into reality with his own label and publishing company, dedicated to glorifying GOD first. This venture also allows other Christian artists to produce Godly music, specifically within the CHH (Christian Hip Hop) and Christian rap genres, for audiences to enjoy. And thus, GODSQUAD MUSIC.com was born, following the legacy of Hinson gospel music and embodying the spirit of Kenny Hinson's 'The Lighthouse.'
